Hatha Yoga for Health and Wellness
Begin or continue your hatha practice, and learn how to reduce stress, increase your flexibility, and enrich your sense of well-being. (Beginners can start the first Monday or Saturday of each month. The first trial class is free!).

Boomers and Beyond

The “Boomers and Beyond” program is offered the first Thursday of every month. As always, we will start with socializing and coffee and treats, and then we’ll head out on the trails if favorable conditions exist to engage in nature’s instructive process. September’s class will enjoy the beauty of fall flowers, and October’s class will delve into the fall colors of trees and shrubs. Registration is required.

Sky Hunters: Word with a Bird

Get a beak-to-beak view of one of SANC’s feathered ambassadors. A raptor handler will be showcasing one of our many birds of prey. Each of our falcons, hawks, owls, vultures, and eagles will appear on a rotating basis. Stop by each weekend to check them out, explore artifacts, visit with a live raptor, and ask questions.

Raptor Saturdays!

Join our feathered ambassadors as they set the scene for discovery. In this family program, handlers allow a close-up view of falcons, hawks, owls, a turkey vulture, and one of our bald eagles. Sharp talons, curved hooked beaks, binocular vision, and incredible hearing make these raptors specialized birds of prey. Raptor Saturdays are always the first Saturday of each month.

Discovery Nature Hiking

Walk along the meadows, woods, wetlands, and lakeshore of the Center while Don Quintenz interprets the scenery and helps answer the questions that nature evokes in us. The entire program is taught on the trail. Physically you need to be able to walk any of the loop trails at the Center taking short but frequent stops.

Schlitz Audubon Bird Club

Check out the fall bird activity at SANC. We will be going out on bird hikes, with the prospects of increasing our bird lists for 2008. Join us for some fall fun.

Parents and their preschoolers are invited to enjoy the captivating storytelling of Chris Jenkins from The Dream Tree. An environmental educator, Chris will share stories that demonstrate the gifts we receive from Mother Nature. Adventures abound – indoors and outdoors.

The Spiritual World of Nature-Evenings

In September, psychotherapist Tom Galten will discuss ancient traditions. Mankind’s religions have viewed the natural world from quite varying perspectives. In October, drawing from his latest book “Thank God for Evolution” that has been endorsed by five Nobel Prize Winners and supported by over 120 other science and religious luminaries, nationally acclaimed speaker Michael Dowd will share humanity’s common origin story known as The Universe Story. This 13.7 billion year evolutionary epic will offer incredible views of the cosmos that embrace science and religion alike. At a time when debates regarding evolution, creationism, and intelligent design abound, Michael bridges the current division between science and religion. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The Spiritual World of Nature

Don Quintenz will lead us on a walk to explore the beauty, fascinating complexity, and material symbolism of the spiritual principles of existence. Our hike through a natural setting will point out some of the many examples of spiritual lessons that are waiting to be gleaned from nature. There will be no daytime October discussion due to the Michael Dowd program the night of October 14th. Light refreshments will be provided.

Fireside Conversations

We will base our discussions around readings in the book In the Absence of the Sacred for the months of September (chapters 10-12) and October (chapters 13-15). For newcomers the prior reading of earlier chapters will not affect your ability to participate and enjoy the discussions. We do have one extra loan copy on hand. You may want to acquire a copy for yourself. Amazon has many used paperbacks for under a buck or two, or you can stop at a local bookstore or public library. Light refreshments will be provided.

Hand-in-Hand for 2-3 Year Olds

Parents and their 2-3 year olds will spend time meeting an animal, reading a book, and taking a hike on the many trails at the nature center. The program takes place on the second Wednesday and Friday of the month and gives very young children the opportunity to make positive connections to the natural world. This program meets rain or shine. Be sure to dress for the weather!

Monday Night Magic

Enjoy a series of warm summer evening hikes at the Center with our Education Specialist Tom Finley. Just the right time and distance for the little ones, these nights are devoted to exploring popular locations such as the tower, ponds, and forest. We’ll likely discover frogs, dragonflies, fireflies and maybe even bats that flitter about. You’re sure to delight in the sights and sounds of an early evening stroll at the Audubon Center.

Marvelous Monarchs

Join Audubon educators Jackie Keltner and Moya Mowbray and learn about Monarchs through interactive activities. We will tag and release Monarchs as part of a North American study through “Monarch Watch”. We will also make paper symbolic butterflies. These symbolic Monarchs will “fly” south and winter with Mexican school children near the winter nesting spots of their live counterparts. Our symbolic butterflies will fly back in spring 2009, and participants can track them online in conjunction with the “Journey North” program.

Nature Adventurers

This is an after school class for our nature preschool alumni and other K5 through 3rd graders who enjoy exploring in the natural world. We will focus on fall themes each week including a hike and other outdoor activities. The class meets once a week for 5 weeks. Please provide a snack for your child and make sure they dress for the weather

Adult Owl Prowl

Spend an evening sleuthing for owls. Learn about their habitats and special adaptations. Accept the challenge and you won’t be disappointed. This program is designed for adults and has limited space. Please register early. Dress warmly, bring a flashlight and come prepared to see an owl. Refreshments will follow.

Family Owl Prowl

Spend an enchanted evening with your family searching the forests and fields under a moonlit sky for owls. Learn about owls, their habitats, haunts and hollers. Dress warmly, bring a flashlight and come prepared to see an owl. This program is designed especially for families. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A craft and refreshments will follow.

Adventure Island

Join Tom Finley on an adventure as we traverse the trails of the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and uncover secrets of the animal world. Journey to the forest to view beautiful fall color, visit Mystery Lake and climb a 60 foot tower. and meet Maria the beautiful rosy boa? See you then.
