Lakeshore State Park
In the heart of downtown Milwaukee, the new Lakeshore State Park provides a unique urban oasis with recreational opportunities and amenities geared to the urban population. Tom Kroeger, the park’s superintendent, will guide us through the area and relay the history and future plans including a park visitor center and a variety of educational programs. Attractive prairie plantings grace the park’s open coastline of Lake Michigan. The park’s lakeside multi-use trail will connect to the Hank Aaron State Trail, the Oak Leaf Trail, and Milwaukee’s recreational lakefront resources. Join us for the drive down or drive yourself. Interpretation provided.

Summer Wetland Canoe
What better way to enjoy the warm days of summer than venturing out in the solitude of a remote wildlife marsh with a bunch of nature nuts in canoes! Join us for a leisurely paddle along one of Wisconsin’s
wonderful rivers. The exact location will be determined closer to the date to ascertain water levels and will be a new area for our trips. You may want to wear a swimsuit (if it is warm). No canoeing experience is necessary. However you may be placed with another person with more experience if necessary. Bring your own lunch, snacks and water.

Old World Wisconsin Garden Tour
Visit the world’s largest museum dedicated to the history of rural life, Old World Wisconsin. Tour the 12 different historic heirloom gardens and plants that are representative of the fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs of Wisconsin in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with an historic gardener. Begin the tour at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center or join us at Old World Wisconsin. Bring a bag lunch to eat by the picnic area. Spend the rest of your time on the trails, visiting historic buildings, or in the gift shop. Transportation, interpretation and fees included.

Chiwaukee Prairie and Volo Bog
Prairies are Wisconsin’s showiest wildflower communities, and this is Wisconsin’s showiest prairie at one of its peak blooms! Guided by Don Quintenz , saunter into this sandy garden of over 300 species of wildflowers. This spectacular bloom, one of three peak flowering times during the year, is dominated by the lovely prairie blazing stars. In the afternoon , we will be at an Illinois State Natural area and a National Natural Landmark. Volo bog lies near the southern most limit of bogs. Transportation and interpretation are provided. Bring your own lunch, water and snacks.

The 32nd Annual Lorrie Otto Wild Yard Tour
Join us for our exciting annual Natural Yard Tour begun by the “Queen of Prairie”, Lorrie Otto. We will tour a minimum of 12 private gardens, some of the most beautiful restored , natural landscaped yards in the area. These yards contain plants that are native to Wisconsin’s prairies and wetlands. Come for a day or a half day. Board the bus at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Bring a bag lunch and beverage and be on the bus by 8:30 am.

Necedah Whooping Crane Observation
Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is one of two experimental sites for whooping crane reintroduction. Venture (5:00 am) into the refuge to a blind where we can observe the different crane chicks being trained by ultra lights. It will be late in the season and we will be able to view between 2 to 3 chick groupings. We will aquaint ourselves with the Refuge’s multiple offerings including a chance to view the greatest concentration of Redheaded Woodpeckers in the state and the reintroduced Trumpeter Swan.

Wolf Tracking & Monitoring in the North Woods
Travel to the wolf’s territory and learn how to use radio-telemetry to track a wolf’s course, and develop howling techniques for nighttime location. Explore the wetlands of the Manitowish Waters and the Powell Marsh Wildlife area and take a boat tour of several lakes on the Luc du Flambeau Flowage. Our base will be the North Lakeland Discovery Center and we will stay at the Timberline Inn. Transportation, interpretation, fees, lodging and breakfasts provided.

Sandhill Crane Viewing & Yerkes Observatory
Each fall thousands of sandhill cranes migrate from the north to southern wintering grounds. The migration starts with the family and along the way larger groups form at the various resting stops. Lake Geneva is one such resting stop hosting 200 to 300 birds at dusk. Our first stop will be the Yerkes Observatory established in 1897 in Williams Bay with a group tour and program. Interpretation, transportation and all fees are included. Bring your own folding chair, bag lunch and drink.

Roche-A-Cri Cave Art Trip
Anthropologist Dave Lowe has uncovered 91 previously unknown sites where prehistoric native art has been carved into or painted onto the surface of sandstone bedrock. These art works consist of geometric shapes, animal and plant forms, and hunting scenes in the overhanging stone shelters and fissure caves that sheltered prehistoric Wisconsin Indians. Join Dave on an exploration of the cave art in Roche-A-Cri State Park, the only publicly owned prehistoric cave art in the state. The 605 acre park has a 300-foot-high rock outcropping with a wooden stairway to the top.

“Birds in Art” at the Woodson Art Museum
The feather forecast is favorable for the 60 works of Birds in Art. Whether the subjects are backyard feeder favorites or exotic species from around the world, an international cast of artists interprets avian themes and habitats employing diverse styles and mediums. We will begin our viewing with a docent led tour of the museum and gardens. In the evening return to the museum to sketch or continue viewing or take a tour of Wausau’s downtown and riverfront. On Friday we will stop at a garden or museum (weather dependent) on our way home. Interpretation, transportation, lodging, breakfast and fees included.
